Road Traffic Offences
Penalty points for driving related offences were introduced into law in Ireland 2002 and are recorded on your driving licence record which is held by the Road Safety Authority. They do not appear physically on your licence.
At Sherry McCaffery Solicitors we can deal with any road traffic related issues in a confidential and sensitive manner. If you have been accused of driving, whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, we can assist and advise you on your legal rights and represent your interests in the District Court and on appeal in all levels of the Courts system.
Areas of advice and representation include:
If you are given a fixed charge you have 28 days from the date the fixed charge notice issues to pay it. Failure to pay, you are allowed a further 28 days to pay the original amount plus a 50% increase. If you do not pay within this 56 day period you will receive a Court summons.
Penalty points stay on a driving licence for a period of three years from their “start date”. Once you commit an offence you will receive a letter from the Department of Transport which will tell you from what date the points become active (start date).
